How a Real Number Is Built

The market, right now
Live spot per troy ounce. This is the starting point for the arithmetic — not the offer.
Spot is the price of one troy ounce of pure metal on the open market. Your jewelry is not pure, so the first step is working out how much actual gold is in it.
Step one — purity
A 14k chain is 58.5% gold. The rest is copper, silver and nickel, and it is not worth anything to a refiner.

We do not read the mark and take its word for it. Every piece is acid or XRF tested, because marks are worn, wrong, and occasionally faked.
Step two — weight, in the right unit
Troy ounce
31.103 grams. The unit spot is quoted in. Roughly 10% heavier than a kitchen ounce.
Pennyweight
1.555 grams. One twentieth of a troy ounce. An old trade unit some buyers still quote in.
Gram
The clearest unit for most people, and the one we will use unless you ask otherwise.
Ask any buyer which unit their number is in. A price per pennyweight looks much bigger than the same offer expressed per gram, and that is not an accident.
Step three — what comes out of the weight
Stones are not gold. Neither are spring clasps, watch movements, glue, enamel, or the steel pin in a brooch. All of that is identified and removed from the weight before any calculation. A buyer who weighs the whole piece and pays a lower rate is doing the same arithmetic with less of it visible.

Common questions
- Why does nobody publish a price per gram?
- Because it would be wrong within the hour. The metal market moves all day. Any buyer showing a fixed price is either updating it constantly or quoting you yesterday.
- Do you pay spot?
- No buyer pays full spot, and anyone claiming to is not telling you the whole story. There is a refining cost and a margin between what a buyer pays and what the metal fetches. What matters is that the calculation is shown to you.
- What is a pennyweight?
- An old jewelry-trade unit: one twentieth of a troy ounce, about 1.555 grams. Some buyers quote in pennyweight because the number looks larger than the gram figure. Ask which unit you are being quoted in.
- Is a troy ounce the same as a normal ounce?
- No. A troy ounce is about 31.1 grams; a regular ounce is about 28.3. Precious metals are always troy. It is a real difference of roughly 10%.
- Does the karat mark guarantee the karat?
- No. Marks can be wrong, worn, or fraudulent, which is exactly why every piece is tested rather than read.
